Stumbled on a good way (I think) to do a static timing check.
I did it with the key in, in the position to hit the starter
(neutral/gen lights on). With the distributor cap off and the bakelite
rotor off, as you manually crank the shaft (clockwise) toward the 10
deg. before TDC mark (2nd from left), the distributor points will spark
just as the shaft causes them to open. You can check when this happens
the position of the 10 deg. wheel mark on the crank in relation to the
arrow on the engine casing, and adjust distributor position by rotating
if necessary.
This is probably nothing new to you smartypantses out there. Cheers.
