John,
are your fuel lines new? maybe you have blockage or maybe your tank is not
venting and it's creating a vacuum and starving one (or both) sides?

but I also agree that the sleeve/piston or valve guide clearance sound more
like the culprit and that you should check it ASAP.

Hi Guys:

In 2003 I picked up a 67 V700. The chrome was shot in the cylinders so
I had cast iron sleeves installed. A good set of stock pistons was
fitted with Greeves rings from MG Cycle. The valve guides were knurled
and the valves and seats reground. All the work was done by a good
friend at the shop he works for - he's a pro at this stuff.

For my first ride I headed up over a small mountain, maybe 1000 ft. My
pace was moderate as the bike was running somewhat poorly due to
misadjusted carbs. As I reached the top of the "hill" the left side of
the engine let out the most awful racket. I yanked the clutch and the
bike died. I pulled the valve covers thinking something had to be
floating around in there and everything was normal. Figuring I had
little to loose I turned the key and the bike fired right up and I rode
it home.

Since then it's happen three other times - always under a load. The
last time I was passing a semi on the interstate - not good!! The bike
runs great otherwise with good compression, no junk in the oil, etc.

The noise is from the left cyliner and sounds like a valve could be
hanging open based on the high frequency rapping sound.

Anyone ever experience anything like this?

John
