Matt and Greg,

I was afraid that someone will suggest so check the main bearing
shells.... This is the last piece on the bike that is not taken apart
yet. If I take that apart then I have taken everything that I can take
possibly apart. I guess there is always the starter and the altenator..
You both are problaby right to check it now since the motor is apart...
There was not too much of the coating missing (about 1/2"x1/8" piece,
but it could be in there. I checked the spindles and all oil ports
already and did not find anything...
Does one need a puller for the crank.. I seem to remember seeing it in
the book...

Hey Gunnar,
I just thought of something to check on your Guzzi resto.

do you still have the big end bearing shells? If you do, look to see if
there are little bright flacks of metal in the duller looking babbitt.
My
original chrome bores flaked and put alot of tiny chrome flakes into the
oil
system. Maybe post some close-ups of the shells on your site.

My big ends were in bad shape, but the crank was still OK. The sludge
trap
was almost full (if you didn't know, this is located on the rear of the
crank, the crank must be removed to service) If this is full, you might
have
issues with oil distribution.

Have you checked the rocker spindles to see if the oil passages were
clogged? Mine were partially clogged with the same particles and some
galling was seen on the spindle and bushings.

I read that you wouldn't be pulling the crank, and just thought to warn
that
if you got the bike without knowing the exact mileage or service record,
checking these things would be a good idea
