John:
I hadn't weighed in on this issue yet, but this reminds me of when
my wife and I rode down to Mid-Ohio several years back, she was on the
'71 Ambo when it suddenly lost power while cruising around 70mph. She
nursed it to the next rest stop where I found that one piston had shut
down. After determining that it was still getting gas and spark and that
there was nothing else to do, we fired it up and she limped it about 40
miles to Mid-Ohio on one cylinder.
The autopsy revealed that for some reason the valve kissed the top
of the piston and bent it enough to hold it open.
After mentioning the cost of a new valve to my machinist brother, he
insisted that he bend it back. 5000 miles later and that valve is still
in there.

Thanks to those of you who responded with suggestions. My gut is it's a
valve. The sleeved are stepped and therefore can't move. Piston
clearance is also correct so that pretty much leaves the valves.

Evidently there was a valve spring binding issue on the early V700's
which is what I have. It would seem like this would be RPM related
though, not load related.

Thanks again,

John
