you've received lots of good advice on this already but here's my 2
cents. Your problem, as described here, is typical on older VW's and
they use basically the same starter setup. On my veedubs it's always
cured by adding a bosch starter relay near the starter ($20 at vw parts
store). Takes about 10 minutes, including Ian's beer lubing
recommendation. On the VW's it's fequently a problem of unusually long
distance the juice has to flow from the ignition to the rear mounted
battery and starter. I'm not sure how this applies to the goose but it
sures sounds familiar. Let us know what solves it please.

Anyone have any ideas, set me straight before I take a wrench to that
thing and start disassembling things and losing screws.
