You are right about things causing problems when cool as well as hot, but I
guess I was thinking about how when things heat up they swell and change,
but I don't imagine they would swell enough to block an exhaust :)

Actually, the jets were horribly wrong when I got the bike, one side had the
idle and main jets reversed. But I bought new jets from the local guzzi
dealer and the bike ran fine for the first 20 miles or so I rode it, this
problem kind of came on all at once.

I'll recheck the jets to make sure they are clear, but I have a newly
POR-15'd tank and a fuel filter so I'm not too hopeful.

At one point it wasn't getting spark and I think it was related to the bolt
on the distributor where the condensor and coil wires attach. That thing
looks pretty mungy, but I can't for the life of me figure out how to remove
it. Even if I dremel'd off the rusty bolt holding it in, it doesn't look
like I could get it out because the points assembly and distibutor cam are
in the way. Is this as difficult as it looks? Also, the plastic thing that
keeps the bolt from contacting ground is really chewed up and I didn't see
another of those at MG Cycle anyone know if they are available?

Thanks again Ian.

Ted

Ted,

Again...if the bike is running ok initially then you can rule out those
things that would cause it to run poorly whether the bike was cold or not.
For example...let's say a mouse made a nest in one of the pipes....that
problem would show up under any condition.

You can install the dist eaily enough. Guzziology has a good description of
how to do it but you basically have to make sure the left hand cylinder is
at TDC on the compression stroke and then insert the dist shaft so that the
cam lobe is just at the point of opening the points. Remember that you have
to be on the right cam lobe as there are two of them. I think the contact on
rotor should point at 6 o'clock...downwards? Also...be sure that the dist
adjusting bolt is in the middle of the adjustment range.

You know.....I am thinking that if the bike starts to misfire at high
rpms....you sure you have the right jets in there? I remember somebody once
had all kinds of problems...turns out the PO had installed the wrong jets in
it. Either that or they are blocked.

...Ian

I wish it was in your garage too :)
Thanks for the distributor info. You brought up another good point about
the distributor. How do I put it back in? Hadn't thought that far ahead. I
need to work on the clutch anyway and I have a timing wheel, so I imagine
that will help somehow. The gears look ok, the thing I was curious about
was the pin that Greg Bender mentioned possibly being sheared, it looks
ok.

Once the bike is warm, it seems to idle fine and if I rev it up, it might
sputter a little, but nothing to worry about, once you start driving it
though it sputters and misses under acceleration or while trying to
maintain speed.

I haven't noticed any excessive black smoke. Though I just noticed the
little internal pipe has started coming out of the back of one of my stock
mufflers. I am wondering if the exhaust outlet might be plugged up.

Thanks, Ted
