while we're on the subject, i'm looking for one of the "head plug
bolts"(directly opposite of the spark plugs) for the 850 style heads -
of if anyone knows pitch/bolt size, i would appreciate it!

Hi Ted,
As Paul said, both valves are larger on the later heads. There is a
raised area around the valve guide that is part of the casting - this
would have to be machined down to match the later heads if you wanted to
use dual springs. Instead of doing this though, I'd either just use the
heads as they are with single springs and small valves (IMHO, the early
Ambos with these heads run plenty strong) or find a pair of later heads.

One other thing that is different is the way they are secured to the
cylinder studs. Instead of a nut with an "allen" head under the hex plug
at the 12 o'clock position on the later heads, there is a bolt/nut
thingy (hex head, approx. 3" long, o-ring groove) on the V700/early Ambo
heads. You'll need these if you're going to use the early heads.

I can post some pics of the two heads side by side for comparison if
you'd like. Cheers,

 Ted,

As Charlie said, the valves on later models like the 850 are bigger,
they
will not fit the V700 heads. Some of the early 750's used the same heads
and
valves as the V700. Rather than machine a good set of V700 heads, look
around for some later model ones. Plenty up on eBay all the time.

Fifteen years ago I changed the heads on my Ambassador, Header pipes
were
moving arround Threads were toast! Put on new heads and kept the
valves. These old valves fitted into the V700 heads! Is that right? Will
850
eldo & 850 t valves fit or are they bigger? For sure the twin springs
will
not fit over the vavle guides. Guides have to be changed so should I
machine
the heads to fit the dual springs or just leave the singles? Thanks for
the
help Guy`s

 Hi Ted,
I wouldn't think there would be a problem with the single valve springs
unless it was with float at high RPMs. The V700/early Ambo heads also
have smaller valve diameters so you'll not get the horsepower of the
later heads. They use a different guide as well, but the later style
will work without the locating circlip or ridge. One plus that I've
noticed though is that the V700 heads don't seem to crack between the
(intake or exhaust? - can't remember right now) valve and sparkplug hole

like most of the later heads do. If you use them I'd recommend using the

reducer inserts sandwiched between two gaskets for proper port velocity
and heat isolation.

Hey Guys I have a old set of heads that came off a 700 or 750 with the
metal inserts for intake side. When you have the inserts out the intake
hole is too big for the newer square sided carbs. Are these heads as
good as the others. Looks like the dual springs will not fit . They have

good exhaust threads! Any problems with the single spring valves.
Thanks Ted
