I only use grease on the gaskets. Never goo.

Hi Ray,

I would agree with your approach, although sometimes I'll use grease
instead of motor oil. I try to avoid using the goo, but I'm not afraid
to use it on some things. The key, in my opinion, is to use a very light
coating of it.

When do I use goo? Well, I choose to use it when the consequences of a
leak involve a lot of my time to dry it up again. On a Guzzi, that's
pretty much limited to the gaskets in the bell housing. I haven't had
trouble with transmission gaskets leaking, so I don't goo those. I also
use it to seal up the neutral indicator switch (not the gasket, but on
the metal rod that fits through the plastic base - remove rod, clean,
cover with goo, reinsert, done).

I think that opinions will vary widely on this topic, but I would expect
to hear that more people avoid it whenever possible/prudent.

the trick is good mating surfaces, cleanliness, and proper tightening.

In your opinion/experience, is it better to install motor gaskets
(except headgasket) with or without a glue or silicone gasket material?
