Greg Field's "Moto Guzzi Big Twins" has a write up on the record setting
Ambos. It describes the "tweaks" done to the bikes (one sleeved down from
stock 757cc to739.2 to vie for the 750cc record & the other left at 757cc to
go after the 1000cc class. The "tweaks" included weight reduction to 347
lbs. by removing shrouds, covers, generator, starter, fenders,
lights....everything not absolutely essential!
In June 1969, " First, famed racer Remo Venturi took to the track. Rounding
a bend, his rear tire began to break up at over 129 mph. He was able to get
the machine stopped without crashing, but he was so shaken by the experience
that he just walked away from the machine and left the trials." YEE-HA!
(before the tire adventure he did set the 100km & 1 hour record both at
130mph, w/ one lap at138.5 mph.)
It's been said before, but Gerg's book is awesome! a "must read " for anyone
at all interested in Guzzis.
