Used to remove plate so you can prep to paint/powder coat just like you
said. New blank plates are available if yours is damaged beyond recognition
like some I have seen. As long as you put back the numbers like they were on
the original, there is no problem. Changing numbers to cover up the fact
that the bike is not really yours is a big no no.

Hi,

Here's my second stupid newbie question.

Since I started lurking, wow 2 1/2 years ago! I've noticed dozens of posts
about this tool. What is the need to remove the VIN plate? The only thing I
can think of is prepping to paint/powder coat the frame. Some posts imply
replacing it with something other than the original VIN plate? On my TLC
list, when this topic comes up, people start crossing their fingers to ward
off this evil subject. For that list, VIN plates are never, ever touched,
tampered with. Is there a difference in VIN plate tinkering between
motorcycles and cars/trucks?

Very curious.

Thanks, I'll go back to lurking now.
