Greg,
Good luck with the DMV. Be persistent. Here's a short story for ya.
Back in early 70's I built a 1942 HD 45" flathead. I bought the cases
from Dixie Cycle in Columbus, Ohio. They were military issue and had no
serial numbers stamped. This worried me as at that time, at least in
Ohio, the DMV used m/c engine numbers, not frame #'s. I was applying for
a "home-built" title. In those days a lot of m/c thieves used this
process to title stolen bikes so the troopers doing the inspections were
cautious, to put it mildly.

It took many visits to finally get a day and a trooper where the mood
was good and a title was issued. Frustrating but I actually had a title
that listed 1942 HD serial #'s "none". Probably pretty rare. I traded
that bike for $600 cash, '61 T-bird, and a '56 VW bus. It was winter,
the wife was pregnant and we lived on Lake Erie. She insisted that I
pick up her and new son from the hospital with 4 wheels and a heater! A
few years later I traded a '57 Les Paul Custom for another flathead.
Those were the days. Hippies without cash trading "beads" for stuff.

Possibly, but I knew right away it was going to be one of those
experiences...

The registration on the Quota went without a hitch. But, the Ambassador
(different clerk, different day), upon my explaining the situation,
immediately threw her hands in the air and left her workstation. 30
minutes later she returns (after speaking with half a dozen people) to
explain how messed up this situation is. They will not transfer title
with the year difference. They gave me a 30 day Florida tag to resolve
the problem - so I'm in the Florida system temporarally. To top it all
off, there is a boat in Florida that has precisely the same 5 digit VIN
as my Ambassador :>

I'll try to resolve the situation through Minnesota. But, if that
doesn't work, I may try another DMV station.

I understand but all the history on that bike is going to reflect it
being a
72....maybe one of the Guzzi books has something that you could show the
clerk...?

Greg, the date on the VIN plate is the build date, not the title date

Funny you should mention this...

I went down to the Florida DMV on Monday to get my title and
registration switched from Minnesota to Florida. Come to find out, the
Minnesota title lists the bike as a 1972 whereas the VIN clearly
indicates it is a 1971. In short, the Florida DMV will not transfer
title (or register it) with that mistake. So, I'm now dealing with the
Minnesota DMV to try and get this situation corrected.

In the meantime, I just renewed the registration on the Minnesota tag
for another year...so I can procrastinate a little longer :>

I had a similar problem awhile back on a old BSA, I just went through a

title service for 75 bucks and got a new title. The bike was from out
of state, so it did not cause any problems
