Hi Patrick,

Yes, the bolt is that long and, yes, it goes through the triangle and
the cover and secures them both to the case.

You can pull the cover without disturbing the shaft...but only if the
swing arm is removed - as you suggested. With the swing arm in place,
you will be forced to remove both the triangle cover and the shift shaft
together as a unit. It may be a little difficult to pull the triangle
cover while leaving the shift shaft in place...only because I'm sure the
cover is pretty well stuck in place and you may need to smack it a bit
to get it loose. You'll just have to cross that bridge when you come to
it. At any rate, I would start with the trans in neutral so that you
have a known position. I really like your suggestion of removing the
swing arm...I think you will save more time in the long run doing that
than trying to fidget with the tight clearances - not too mention fewer
bloody knuckles and a lot less frustration. This is also one of those
jobs that is much easier on a lift...if only I had one!

You da man! Nice pics. Easy to understand.

12th picture down, does the shifter housing cover really have a bolt
that long? Maybe that bolt is serving dual purpose to hold the shifter
plate to the rear cover and also rear cover to the main box?

Can the shifter cover be pulled off without the shifter shaft and arc
gear coming out as well?

If I pull the swingarm for ease of access, are there any frame
crossmembers to prevent the shifter cover from pulling aft?
