71 Ambo. It's basically newly rebuilt, maybe 500 miles on it by previous owner.

Just your basic lurch and stall in first, so eloquently described by Greg.
But I can take off smooth in 2nd, no faltering, no problem. Maybe I'm just
a second rate kind of guy ;)

Now why do you suppose it is easier to start off in second than in
first? What kind of bike is he riding? Could this be a loopframe with
an old, notched, dirty clutch that works like an electric switch?
Heavens, I've never heard of such a condition. Bitch to get started
off in first when they grab like that.

So, do tell. What model and year of bike? What happens if you do try
to start off in first?
