There is spark on the inside of the cap between the rotor and the
cylinder contacts. If a crack is present the spark will jump to it as
the shortest way to ground. The clear coat fills the tiny cracks and
prevents this. Give it a try and see if the problem goes away. You can
always try turning off the lights and firing up the bike and watching
the cap. Sometimes you will see a cool light show if the cap is bad enough.

A cracked cap can give you grief. The crack can be so small you can't
even see it. A cheap fix is to spray it on the inside and outside with
some clear coat then carefully clean off the contact points. Did this
on my Ambo years ago and it ran fine for a number of years this way.
