I have noticed in the summer, I get worse gas mileage. I just chalked it up
to the heat evaporating the fuel from the tank. I have a goofy custom gas
cap with a hole drilled straight through for a vent. Sometimes you can even
see the vapors coming out causing residue on the top of the cap. The PO
messed up the filler neck, so I can not use the stock cap.

BINGO! Don't inspect anything. Just keep riding. Stay off of highway
5 or just expect to pay for the experience.
