Run the solenoid wire start to the battery by-passing the voltage reg.
The
starter will begin to crank.

Also check you ground wire off the battery for a good connection.

In the interests of trying to get the slow-turning problem solved (and
not trying to be a negative PITA as it may sound like I'm trying to be),
I don't think that's going to help either.

If the solenoid contacts are "making", and passing current to the
starter, (which they must be or the starter wouldn't turn), then feeding
the solenoid directly rather than via the regulator isn't going to
change how fast the engine turns over.

The problem has got to be in the circuit from the battery positive to
the main starter lug, through the starter mount to the engine block and
back to the negative terminal on the battery. I'll bet there's a bad
ground connection in the high-current starter-motor circuit.

Patrick Hayes is my new god of the golden eldo starter anyway, since
seeing his comprehensive description of why my bendix won't engage. I
haven't torn into it yet but the solution is in his description
somewhere. I'll let him be the judge of whether I'm wasting your time
on this one or not....
