I installed cast iron guides years ago on my 1 Ambo and they're still going
strong. The bike doesn't smoke or show oil fowling of the plugs which would
indicate guide wear.

I turned a taper at the top so they'd shed oil - no valve seals. The idea
being that valve seals prevent the stem from getting any lubrication and can
cause guide wear.

This is the bike that's running modified small block Chevy valves. As I
wrote a few weeks back the complete job cost me $40 on parts, but that was
17 years ago.

New question, different motor.

I am working on a friends Ambassador- my very broke friend on a
shoestring budget. Needs valve guides replaced - he was burning oil- I
did a compression tests and it was fine, took off the heads and the
valve surfaces look fine, but when I took them out they are too loose in
the guides- checked the stem taper and it is Ok too (checked the specs
in the book, don't remember off hand)- anyway, if it were me I would get
new valves and new guides from MG Cycle and be done, but that is also
about $300 for both sides. One suggestion from an auto guy was that is
the taper is good, to ream the existing valve guides and insert guide
liners- I priced the liners and they are about $10 for 4 and talked to
an automotive machine shop that quoted $100 to ream 4 existing guides
and install the liners and trim them.

Anybody ever done this?

Now, the other thing is that I don't know the history of this engine,
but from the condition of the valve surfaces, this seems to be premature
valve guide wear- which would lead me to believe there is a problem with
the rocker aligment somewhere- or is it possible that poor valve
clearance adjustment could cuase this as well? Or maybe someone just put
in new valves with old guides last ime?
