This is an approach that I had pondered once also.
The only thing I was warned about by by boss (really sharp mechanical
engineer) was that if the pump was designed to sit so that the suction
was submerged in the oil. Then simply adding a longer pickup tube to
this would raise that portion higher than it was designed to be and
thereby change (dramatically or insignifigantly He said he could figure
it but would need the pump design specs to do it) the pressure drop
across the pump.
Based on my not knowing and too lazy to drop the pan on an old motor I
just let it pass.
You have rekindled my thoughts and I'll be looking at a pump tonight.
I'll pass on anything I find out.
