Hey Greg, I have often thought that my Ambo would be a better bike if only
it had one more gear so it would not rev as high at highway speeds. But I
have heard that simply putting a 5 speed tranny on an Ambo doesn't really
render the desired effect of actually having a longer-legged bike. bob

Hi Joe,

I think this is a great topic to start. I know that I would really enjoy
learning about performance enhancements. Here are a couple of additional
topics I'd like to add to the pot:

- Dual plugging the heads. Probably not the highest impact change, but
something to consider nonetheless.
- 4 versus 5 speed transmissions (do you have the 850T 5 speed on
Junkyard?) The top gear ratio in both is identical, but the 5 speed
gives you more options.
- Gear sets in the rear drive...especially the idea of moving to
something like a 7/33 ratio. (do you have the 8/35 or the 8/37 gear set
on Junkyard?) The stock Quota ratio is 8/33. When I switched the Quota
to 7/33 for a bit, it became an entirely different bike. Much improved
acceleration and it would get to redline much faster.
- Flywheel lightening/RAM clutch - My assumption is that this will have
the greatest impact when taking off from idle, and that it will have a
lesser impact when rolling-on while at speed??? The negative, of course,
is that the smoothness and characteristic loopness will be sacrificed.

The Dyno test you mentioned is a critical component to all of this as
the human brain often confuses perception as an accurate indication of
sensation/reality. It would be nice to compare facts after each
modification is made, although this would get expensive unless you have
a "hey, good buddy!" connection.

So what to do? I want more power, especially more torque in the
4000/6000 rpm range. Where to look? Bigger bore, carbs/intake, the
heads, the exhaust, the camshaft, and the ingition curve. I want to
build an engine that runs!
