Hi Dane,

If you've got the stock brass? nuts, I think Mark Etheridge recommended
using a cone shape piece of something to spread them a little bit. I
think someone on this list recently did that successfully. If you are
getting the steel locking ones from MG Cycle, you may have to wait and
see how the fit is - I'm not sure you'll be able to spread them much.

As an aside, I had the threads in one of my heads repaired and - due to
a mistake on my part - didn't end up with enough threads left on my nut
to fully tighten the header pipe into the head. Rather than send the
head back for repair, I fashionned a spacer out of a large washer to fit
between the exhaust nut and the exhaust flange. I just found a large,
thick washer of the appropriate OD at my local Home Depot and then
drilled/filed the inside out to the appropriate ID. It has worked very
well for me.

So what is the best way to size them? I just put new pipes and mufflers
on
my 68 and I need to replace all the nuts...

Hi Ross,

I think the diameter is a definite contributing factor. A reader
mentioned that in the TIPS II book I was reading last evening as the
wife watched the last episode of "The Apprentice" (don't even get me
started on 'reality' shows).

An e-mail posted to the Norton list regarding loosening exhaust nuts
raised an interesting question.
One lister started measuring exhaust nuts front different sources and
found the diameters all over the board. He measured a difference of
almost 0.02 in diameter. Besides the steel v. bronze issue, could this
be part of the problem with loosing exhaust nuts on Guzzis?

Ross
