AJ,

I would try to run 12 volt to the blue/black side and make sure the
ground is connected. I did this by accident when rewiring by Eldo and
the needle maxed.

Hmmm,

I'll try that, but looking at the wiring diagram and the back of the
tach,
I have:
a bulb
a ground
black to negative side of coil
blue-black to positive side of coil.

Are you saying run 12 volts to positive and both the ground and the
black
wire to ground and the needle should max out?

I have the tach out on my desk so that would be an easy check if I
understand you correctly.

Thanks,

 AJ,

Did you try to use use a hot lead (12volt) on the blue/black wire side?
The black is ground, blue/black gets the voltage from the contacts
(points) which is interrupted according to the opening of them, thus
supplying more voltage at higher rpm. Using straight 12volt should move
the needle all the way to max rev...
Before checking Ebay I would open the tach to check for loose
connections. Not much can go wrong with one of those other then
connection problem or burned through wiring..

DOH! I got it thanks!!!

Jumpering didn't work so I guess it is dead. There isn't another way to
test a tach is there?

Guess I'm looking at eBay or repair.

Thanks to everybody who told me to look up :)
