Actually, I just finished removing and reinstalling the transmission without removing that brake rod (cause I couldn't get the damn thing off) I had to just leave the swingarm kind of dangling, but it worked okay.

I seem to recall you do have to remove the "shaft" that holds the brake actuating lever(s), right? Ted - I agree, your method will work so long as those bolts are not too tight. It is really easy to bust off a pin/allen wrench in there. :)
