Could it be that your aftermarket switch turns on both the high and low
beams at the same time? It could be overheating the filaments.
You might consider re-wiring it through a relay also.

Check Mr. Field's suggestion on the chokes- then synch your carbs. It's
very easy- with the bike not running, back out the idle screws, open the
throttle and let it close. Listen for the click as the slides hit
bottom. Adjust either side so they hit bottom at the same time. The
adjuster nut is on top of the carb body. When you are happy with it,
screw in idle screws so the bike idles. You're done for a good first
approximation.
