Ted,

I had similar problems with - mine, only much worse. The
front output shaft nut came loose on mine. Ended up all
of my shift forks getting "machined" by being allowed to
migrate (except fifth gear in my circumstances).

I basically went through my transmission, replaced the
shift forks, put in new seals, and reshimmed (thank you
Pete Roper) with help from lots of folks on this board.
I'm not a mechanic, but I managed it just fine - seems to
be working well after a few hundred miles.

So your diagnosis sounds plausible to me; I'd just look
over your shift forks and make sure they haven't been bent
or machined, put'r back together and torque it down good.
The manual says the rear output shaft nut should be 129
ft/lbs - so I used my rattle gun and wound up the pressure
a bit.

If you need good used Tranny parts (new ones are
outrageously priced), talked to John Schwartz, he does a
lot of old guzzi tranny work (and is a nice guy). Got me
good used forks for a fraction of new.

Okay, so I had the 5 speed transmission that I put it
and it was
making some scary noises in 5th gear, I noticed a few
funny
noises in neutral too but nothing extreme.

I took the transmission off and shifted into 5th on the
bench
and spun the input gear and could hear a bit of
clunking. Didn't
get it in the other gears. Then I noticed the nut on the
output
shaft was loose I could turn it with my finger. I
tightened that
up and the noise went away. Loosened it and the noise
came back.

Now, I want to think thats it and put everything back
together
but I DO NOT want to do all that and find its not the
problem
after all.

Does it make sense to any of you gurus that a loose
tranny
output nut would cause racket that is if not ONLY in 5th
gear at
least a lot WORSE in 5th gear?
