My first Ambo was #13268. Not far from yours Tim! It now lives in Nipomo,
CA.

 greg and rich,
this is something I've been planning to ask someone also. My ambo
came
with the lever up, the Eldo lever down. I looked in a whole lot of 70's
literature with photo's of loops from the time period and found it both
ways in pictures of new bikes.

I found the same thing......depends on your brake plate.....My Ambo
#13283 has the operating rod above the axle, horizontal, and the
actuating arm sticking up at about 4 o'clock. The brace arm is at 7
o'clock.
As Steve said, pics reveal differences. One article that lists the Ambo
as #13065 (anyone on this list??) and shows the operating rod at a 30
degree upward angle to meet the actuating arm, which is mounted at about
2 o'clock, and sticks up.

An article on a V700 shows the actuating arm sticking down from 2
o'clock, and the rod in the horizontal.

The majority, Ambos and Eldos, and even the famous ZDS racer, all have
the horizontal rod, above the axle, and the actuating arm pivot at 4
o'clock, sticking up. Apparently there must be different brace arms.
