So this is the BOSCH solenoid we are talking about? Had me starting to
worry as I have had my Marelli one apart twice and don't recall any kind
of fiber gasket.

The gasket is NOT on the starter per se. The gasket we are disussing is

on the back end of the BOSCH solenoid. The solenoid body is metal. The

contacts are retained in a plastic cap at the rear of the solenoid. The

gasket resides between the plastic cap and the solenoid body.
