I don't know if this has anything to do with the problem, but the yokes are
different sizes on each end. Very close in size but different. I spent a
hole day on my first guzzi years ago, until I found this out.

When I had the swingarm out of my Ambo several weeks ago, I had the same
problem on re-assembly. The U-joint had slipped forward out of the
carrier bearing and wasn't seated properly, therefore, the swingarm was
not aligning on the right side. Took me awhile to figure out why the
U-joint was sliding all of the way up onto the tranny spline but the
swingarm wasn't aligning on that side. I stood the swingarm up on it's
end and slipped the U-joint back down inside and tapped her in, then
realized it wasn't seated. Re-installed without any issues.

My question is, Ray said the following:

"Then I looked at the end that was installed in the carrier and noticed
the marks showed it wasn't fully seated. So a few measurements with the
calipers and a plan for identifying proper seating were devised. Joint
in the freezer, heat gun on the bearing. Some dead blow hammer whacks
later, using an old messed up driveshaft as a tool, and down it went."

I'm confused on this part. What marks are you referring to? Where is
the fully seated point on the U-jon? I was able to tap my U-joint in
pretty easily, no heat or whacking needed. Did I do something wrong or
is there something wrong with my carrier bearing? If it is worn,
perhaps this is why I am getting oil migration?????

Finally installed motor/trans/swing arm in the frame yesterday. Sure
smells like progress! I put one new pic up.

Lesson learned: a few weeks ago I installed the rebuilt u-joint (John
Chicoine) in the carrier bearing already installed in the swing arm. I
was sloppy. The joint didn't fully seat. When I first attempted swing
arm install yesterday the mount holes in the frame wouldn't line up.
After a cold brew and some head-scratching I removed the u-joint and
measured it against some others. Yep, same overall length. Then I looked

at the end that was installed in the carrier and noticed the marks
showed it wasn't fully seated. So a few measurements with the calipers
and a plan for identifying proper seating were devised. Joint in the
freezer, heat gun on the bearing. Some dead blow hammer whacks later,
using an old messed up driveshaft as a tool, and down it went. Easy
install after that. Hope to have a rolling chassis this weekend.
