Ray,
the long side should be the side that goes toward the carrier bearing. I put
my UJ in a lathe and turned off a minute amount of material from the other
end (which was actually the same length but just not machined) until it was
about .001" or two larger than the size of the bearing ID, so it would be an
interference fit. I chilled the UJ and warmed the bearing with a hair dryer
prior to install and it's working OK so far.
The reason I flipped it was that there was some scoring damage on the long
end where it had spun inside the bearing.
