Paul and Greg,

Thanks for your responses, I was wondering if I might have the first
one.

Greg, I assume you are the same Greg Field who authored the book
"Moto Guzzi big twins". On page 27 there is a copy of a price list
Effective Feb 1, 1969. For the Ambo they list a Date of Availability
to be announced at Daytona time. Does that make sense if mine was
manufactured in Dec. of 1968? Any chance you could scan that memo
and email it? Any other good sources of info on these early Ambos?

Thanks again,

Steve

It's real. I have a premier motor corp. memo thtat mentions the
12xxx-numbered ambassadors and the difference between them and the
later ambassadors.

Steve,

Welcome to the list! By the looks of it you may have the very
first Ambo out
of production. I have not come across one with A12000 yet, so
right now
yours is the first! Yep, no 10XXX, 11XXX or even 19XXX or 20XXX
that we can
find. The only real way to check if yours is really a Ambassador
is to pull
the head and measure the piston. 80mm for V700 and 83mm for Ambo
and Eldo.
The Eldo just used a longer stroke to obtain the 850cc. I wouldn't
pull the
head unless you are rebuilding everything, no sense in disabling a
running
bike just to satisfy your curiosity right? So far to date we have
321 loops
accounted for of which 38 are V700, 130 are Ambassador and 153
Eldorados.
But I know there are more out there, as not everybody has
volunteered their
VIN for the records.

Since we're making introductions and talking VIN #'s here, I've
been lurking
on the list here for a couple of weeks now. My name is Steve and
I just
acquired what I believe to be an early Ambo. The chassis number
is 12.001
and the engine number is A12001. I found an article on the MGNOC
website by
Ian Adkins about 'rare birds' that refers to this A prefix as
maybe being
pre-production or first run production Ambos.
(http://www.mgnoc.com/_overlay/Archives/rare_birds.htm) He
also mentions that he has not seen an Ambo with #'s 10xxx or 11xxx.
Mine has a manufacture date of Dec. 1968 which also does not fit
what I've
been able to find about Ambos. Do I actually have a very early
Ambo or is
it a V700 with an Ambo decal stuck on it?

Thanks for your help and I'm sure I'll be back with more questions
as I
become more familiar with the bike. BTW, I'm in Gainesville, FL
and just missed the gathering at Big Daddy's a couple of weeks ago.
I had just acquired the bike and did not have the registration (or a
license) yet. I hope to make the gathering coming up in
Brooksville in
October.
