Dave, I paid $1ooo for my 72 eldo but I've had to rewire it and still
haven't any idea if it even runs. The carbies also need doing. But I
don't care. It's the bike I want. You have already made up your mind
at any price, haven't you? Go ahead, say it," I love giving people
money." I once bought a pair of boots for $1800. Michael Ittner

Had to replace the front tire so I decided to grease the head stock
bearings. I have stripped down the front end and ready to remove the
front forks as a complete assembly, is this possible? My plan is to
remove the two spanner type nuts on the top of the stem and drop
everything down and then out, is this possible? Do I have to remove the
large nut on the bottom of the stem to get to the bearings? Does
everything just slide out the bottom? I have the factory manual but no
really good info on what happens next. No leaks on the shocks so I'm
going to just replace the oil. I'm considering a single weight motor
oil, 40wt(detergent or non-detergent) or should I stick with fork oil
only?

Just remove the two top nuts like you said and the whole thing will
slide
out the bottom. No need to mess with the big nut on the bottom at all.

Keith,

Greg is right, just go slow and use lots of lube. Try tapping it from
one
side and then move to the other side to tap it back the other way.
Make sure
the jack under the motor is just barely touching the pan. The slightest
amount of pressure can bind things up.

Hi Patrick and Mark and Charlie and Bill and Greg,

Thanks for all your replies!

The Ambo has timing gears, so a replacement chain tensioner is not
needed. I was in the timing chest last year when I replaced my timing
gears (camshaft gear broke). At that time, I replaced the cover seal
and
the o-ring behind the crankshaft gear - and I'm not getting any leaks
from the seal, so that's good.

I had the cover on and off a couple of times - reusing the cover
gasket.
So, that may be the problem in and of itself. I did have a little
trouble with getting the gasket to seal properly along the bottom four
bolts. I tightened the bolts and that seemed to get it to seal - but I
remember it seeming 'iffy' at the time. I think I'll try using the
Permatex 300 in addition to a new gasket.

Isn't there a traditional oil seal riding on the rotating cranshaft
surface? Most likely it is the seal and not the gasket. Be prepared
to
closely examine the surface that the seal rides on. Has to be

Hi Bob,

If you haven't changed the seals in a few years, I'd consider swapping
them out at the same time. It doesn't take much longer and may prevent
a
leak right around the corner. The only special tool you'll need is the
fork collar removal tool, which MG Cycle sells. Other than that, it's
pretty straight forward.

Great Job! I do have a question, though....I've seen other Indians
of the same year, with fender skirts...what gives? Did they come
standard,or as an option, or only on some models?
Bil--Thanks! 1940 was the first year for skirted fenders, although this
was originally an olive drab military bike-the 741b. Displacement was
30.50 cu. (500cc.). The US Army decided to go with the HD 45", and many
of these were exported overseas; mine came from NZ where they shipped
5000 of them just before the end of the war. Lots of war surplus there,
they were considered junk until recently. It's a real dog on the road,
but starts on the first kick and will run at 40mph all day long.

Hi guys, sorry for the late reply, I just got back from the AMCA
Wauseon , OH swap meet, saw one poor beat to sh*t Ambo, mostly
disassembled engine and left out in the rain to rust, for way too
much money. Rode the bumble bee around, had a great time
http://myweb.core.com/photos/spajohn@raex.com/Motorcycles
Regarding the V700 decals, I'd be happy to have some made up,
although the market for them is probably pretty small, which is why I
haven't done it to date. What I would need is clean, sharp
reproducible black and white art in the correct size to start. Tom's
decals 'might' work. There would probably be a small setup to begin
and the decals wouldn't be any more expensive than the ones I have
now.
I've seen pictures of just a V7 on a sidecover , and also V7 with
700cc under it per Greg's book, so doing it right the first time
would be nice. What colors, if other than black, did they come in?
Ron, Dorien and Dane--feel free to chime in with details..
And lastly, how many of you guys want them? So far I count three.
These may be a limited production collector's item, so step up and
be counted!

I just joined the Loopframe list. I currently have a 1973 V7 Sport,
but am
circling an Eldo at this time and anticipate needing a bit of advice
as I
move forward. It has 25k miles, front disc, but needs some work to
put in
on the road. Heads are off with a stuck piston. I would put a set of
Gilardonis on it if I bought it. It would be a fairly straightforward
resto, because it is very complete. I am arguing price. He wants 3k
which
seems a bit high to me. I hope we come to an agreement, because I
think the
Eldo is an great bike and would love to take on the project. Dave

Thanks for the heads up, I couldn't find dbcycles on the web, but
he
does indeed run an ebay store and sells the V7 decals for $18/set. I
suggest that anyone wanting these to go here.

The shop that was selling the vinyl V700 battery cover decals on ebay
is DB Cycles. They have a web site, dbcycles.com and an email link.
No sense reinventing the wheel if they still have some or can guide
you to the folks who supplied them.

Use some 100 grit emery on the exposed section of the bolt where it
passes through the trany if it has junk on it as this crud can make it
bind. The aluminum spacers may also be oxidized and giving you fits.
As
others have said, patience, persistence and lubrication - I always ask

Anyone ever have a rough time removing the rear engine bolt that slides
through the tranny case, bushings, and onto the frame? This thing is in
there! It spins, and I have the engine supported with no pressure. I
have been popping at it with a punch and have gotten it out about 2
inches, but man, that took over an hour to get it that far. I was
curious about taking some heat to it in case the gunk or mineral
deposits have built up that bad, but I am not sure. Any tips will be
appreciated.

3 grand is a bit much for a bike with a stuck engine usless the rest of
the bike is pristine. I've seen some nice loops sell on ebay for that.
My opinion.

I just joined the Loopframe list. I currently have a 1973 V7 Sport,
but
am circling an Eldo at this time and anticipate needing a bit of advice
as I move forward. It has 25k miles, front disc, but needs some work
to
put in on the road. Heads are off with a stuck piston. I would put a
set
of Gilardonis on it if I bought it. It would be a fairly
straightforward resto, because it is very complete. I am arguing
price.
He wants 3k which seems a bit high to me. I hope we come to an

Eldo is an great bike and would love to take on the project. Dave

It may seem a bit much, on the other hand an old Moto Guzzi for
sale can be pretty hard to come by in rural areas so it might be
worth a little more to avoid having to truck 1000 miles to get a
cheaper one. Just one more thing to consider, I got ripped off
on mine for 2k but I was unable to find anything else in the
area and the guy trucked it in from Alabama for me.

Dave:

One thing to keep in mind. If it's in very nice original condition
leave it alone. Repainting it will make it look prety, but it will no
longer be original. A slighly patina'd original bike is worth more in
my opinion than a redone show queen.

Since all the loops I've ever purchased were total, neglected wrecks
I've never had to make that decision, but wouldn't mess with a nice
stock bike if I were ever to come across one.

Cut a deal and start the fun! Loops will only go up in value (buy a
car
and watch the value drop thousands overnite). It's only when you sell
it
that you find out if you put too much into it (always the case with me
in the quest for perfection).
The memories are priceless!

Or you can buy a complete replacement from NAPA for a bit more. Not
made
as well (what is these days?) with a plastic base vs. metal of the
original. Uses wedge type bulbs vs. bayonet base. A little net
searching
will probably find you some that use LEDs. Possibly Grote or Peterson
Mfg.? Cheers,

Thanks for the reply. So they are just the basic semi-trailer marker

Does anyone have a good source for replacement tail light lenses for
the

wixom bags? Specifically the red oval lenses, part number 556-1. NOS
or
aftermarket is fine.

I picked up a set of T3 heads that I'm going to be putting on the

just swap things out or is there more to it than that? Do I need to
address anything with the push rod tubes or gaskets?

Perhaps just a set of T3 head gaskets? Seems to be a different part
number than the Ambo/Eldo head gaskets. I probably just need to call
Rick and Gordon and see what they have to say.

Greg,

You will need to use the T3 head and base gaskets. The pushrod holes
in the
jugs will also need to be reamed out so your pushrods don't come in
contact
with the sides. The gaskets on the T series have oval holes for the
pushrods
whereas the Loop type are just round. If you don't do the mods then the
pushrods will wear out rubbing against the gaskets and the Ambo pushrod
tubes. I believe Guzziology tells you about it also.

Paul
