I second Dave's opinion on Champion plugs. How exactly do they
manufacture a non-working plug? On the rare occassions that I had a bad
one it took me a good long time to figure it out because it seems like
such a simple thing.

(Mental note: Put spare plugs on Jackal before riding to National)

During one of the multiple reassemblys of my '72 Eldo the battery ground
came loose. The bike started fine and ran in the driveway but every
time I hit a bump everything quit. The cable was making random contact
on the battery pan and elsewhere.

Another time I decided to lubricate the points rubbing block and smeared
a little oil in there before tottering off to bed. Headed for work the
next morning the bike would not start as the points could not ground
properly. A little WD-40 got me to work a little late.

After painstaking restoration my '72 was looking very fine and I rode it
to help out a friend with a '70 Ambo. We were tuning his bike when I
got the brainwave -- I could use my tach to monitor his bike. It
worked. As an extra I learned when reassembling my bike that if you
attach the the tachometer wire to the wrong (non-diode?) connection the
bike will not start as this grounds the points. A minor problem but it
took me three days to figure out :(
