I've had good luck with plain ol concrete degreaser. I use Oil Eater. Soak
it on undiluted. Let it sit. Soak it on some more and scrub with a soft
brush then rinse off with water. WD40 to chase the water from the crannies
of the tranny when youre done.

OK guys, it's time for me to start thinking about putting my
transmission back together. Before I do, I want to get the aluminum
housing into top cosmetic condition. Presently it has some staining from
gear lube, battery acid/battery tray rust, road tar, and a few other
things I can't quite identify. Any suggestions as to how to get all this
stuff off and have the case come out looking factory new?

I have tried Eagle Mag Wheel Cleaner (Formula B) with limited success as
there is still a fair amount of staining on the rear cover. I was
thinking about bead or plastic media blasting, but another friend of
mine tried it and his castings still look blotchy. Hmmmm....what next,
boiling in lye?! Paint? Oh for the days when every good industrial
maintenance shop had a 55 gallon drum of carbon tetrachloride!
