I'll agree with Patrick, the velosity[[sp] stacks do make a difference. I
took them off my G-5 a long time ago, put K&Ns on, the spare parts in an old
set of saddle bags. Someone stole the bags along with other stuff out of my
garage. Thought my mileage went down and blamed it on age and higher speed
limits.
Bought some carbs for my Eldo from Moto Guzzi Classic and they advised me
that I should put the stacks back on as it didn't have them on either. So
just for the hell of it I put them on the G-5 to see if they were really that
important. After riding this bike for 12/15 years like it was I must have
gotten used to it,with them on it feels like a different motorcycle. And my
mileage is back up to 45/50 MPG.
Also the condenser was weak, get up to 85/90 and it acted like it had a
governor on it. That was after I put the stacks on. Don't like to take the
old girl up in those high numbers RPM wise, Too old and too many miles.
Some other things you may check is the inside the coil wire receptacle
into coil. Same goes for distributor end. They get all grungied up over
time, turn green& nasty. Also if you don't have solid core wire you may want
to check them for continuity,
Ron
