Good advice. The source of oil is the rocker chamber. The real culprit is a
worn INTAKE guide. As the piston sucks down and a volume of air rushes
through the intake air port past the valve stem, it sucks oil down between
the stem and guide and pollutes the combustion mixture (=pinging).

Now, if you have an exposed valve single like my '46 SuperAlce, you have to
have some oil for lubrication (since there isn't any on top). The cast iron
head includes a neat little passage to feed oil down through the intake
guide. Not all is consumed by fire and some residual lubricates the exhaust
stem on the way out. A dead loss system.
