A good Bosch or Marelli should come up with 30 amps . The most common
conversion alternator is the 55 amp unit from a 1000cc Geo Metro. The
little Hitachi used on Kubotas also has some potential (electrician's
pun ,sorry) with it's 45 amp rating. There is also a very cute 40 amp
unit found on some Merc outboards that should be an easy swap.
Now for the down side: None of the above units have an enviable
reliability rating among the rebuilders who work on them. It seems they
have a habit of open rotor-itis . It may however be that when used on
our little loopsicles at lower curent draws out in the air flow the open
rotor thing will be a non issue.
Our Ol' bud Tom can tell you what the life expectancy of a V-dub
Generator is when deprived it's much needed cooling air !

I have a new Nippondenso 55 amp unit from a Geo Metro and if no one
picks up these two old scrappers from my garage there will be a 1972-5/6
Eldo sporting an alternator this spring !

I'd like an alternator, too, just for the extra amps.

That said, the gen keeps up with the headlight, two spots, and an
electric vest on my Eldo, so I don't know why I would bother.

Some time ago there was a discussion about upgrading the generator
on an Ambo to a nice little alternator off a Japanese car. There
was even fairly detailed instructions given in a web page, which I
saved a local copy of.

The sticky bit is the lathe work. Access to a lathe is, for me,
only a little less difficult than access to a fissionable
materials. (And I don't work in a power plant - I'm a computer
programmer.)

So the punchline:

Does anybody make, or would they like to make, a bolt-on kit
for the alternator upgrade? I understand that I'd be paying
for convenience, so it would cost some $$$.

What prompted this: I bought an electric vest (and just in time
for spring, too!) and am worried that the stock electrical
system may be, ummm, marginal for this application.
