The manual calls for 30wt fork oil which is available at bike shops. I
use regular fork tuning oil which will be less likely to foam up
(theoretically) than regular motor oil. A thicker oil "stiffens" the
dampening but don't go too thick or you'll tend to "push" in the
corner's. 30 wt has served my V7 well over the years. Don't use
synthetic motor oil at all, I tried this once and boy did it ever leak.

Also, to answer someone else's post, yes you have to remove the plugs
under the speedometer console (dash) to put the oil in, measure it
carefully and make sure to tighten the nuts back on correctly. The crush
washer under these plugs and the "O" ring below that are the only things
keeping the fork oil from trickling under there and making a mess of
wiring etc.
