Hey Dennis,

There is a light spring (as you probably know) on the lever at the back
of the transmission. It is meant to hold the slack out of the cable. This
spring is easily overcome with one finger. If you truly have no free play
in the clutch at the lever on the transmission then it is one of two
things. Either the cable is adjusted too tight or the adjuster on the
transmission is in too far which would push the lever out away from the
transmission 'til it hit frame.
The service manual calls for the center of the lever at the cable end to
be 67-69mm from the face of the transmission cover. That is, the gasket
surface where the cover and the case meet. Make sure there is slack in
the cable (or unhook it) and push the lever forward with your finger to
overcome the light spring and then adjust the screw at the pushrod in or
out. Measure from the inside of the hook on the lever or from the center
of the lever. Then hook up the cable and adjust the free play in it.
While it is important to get close on the adjustment to maintain the
proper geometry of the transmission lever vs. the hand lever keep in mind
it is a Guzzi so anywhere close should be fine. I measured mine and it is
right at 70mm and working perfectly.
Beyond that make sure your cable and handlebar lever are in good shape
and operating smoothly. If you are still having problems disengaging with
it all adjusted properly then there may be a problem with your clutch.
Let's hope not!
I hope this helps you with your clutch. If you need it I can scan the
page in the manual for you but to tell the truth, the picture does not
show what to measure as it was shot at an odd angle.

newly installed clutch & deep spline hub in my Eldo with maybe 50

when it gets hot neutral is very hard if not impossible to locate, and
downshifting gets more difficult. I am concerned as to whether the
clutch arm in the back of the transmission is correctly adjusted. I
could use some help and advice. I know that the clutch arm should
not come in contact with the trans housing when the clutch lever is
pulled at the handlebars, and it doesn't. I am concerned that it
may be adjusted too far out, although I am not sure what is
correct. There is no play at all in the clutch arm, it is under
constant spring tension. Currently, with the clutch cable off, my
clutch lever arm is under spring pressure and pressing on the lower frame
cross member. If I loosen the adjusting nut, the nut loosens, but
the arm does not move. Just what exactly is the procedure here, and
how can you tell that the arm is adjusted correctly?
