The generator belt should be on the loose side. Tightness is what helps
fracture the generator bracket.

Regarding your limp home; Forget it. I lost a generator in Death Valley
(brushes bottomed out and stopped contacting). I fully charged the bike at
the gas station in Furnace Creek and headed for home. I never had to use the
starter as my wife was along on her bike and she always pushed me while I
bump started. She'd catch up in a few miles. I used hand signals and
disconnected the front brake switch. That way I could always slow gradually
without wasting my brake light.

Made it all the way home 560 miles! Still idled sweet in the garage. Turned
it off and tried to start. Not even a click.

Moral: You can go a very long way using only ignition coils from a good
battery.
