I only did a mere 1881, Mike Skaggs did 3000. Credit where credit is due. :-)

Don't know why mine has been such a reliable old beast, PO only rode it 3000 miles in 13 years of ownership. Sitting around like that usually causes all sorts of maladies, but in the first couple of months with me all it needed a u-joint boot. I did go through the wiring harness and tighten up any loose connectors, coating them with dielectric grease as I went. The supposedly "cheesy snuffbox" switches had their contacts cleaned and were packed with dielectric grease also.
It's been very reliable from the start - the only items that have been replaced are the battery, coil (both leaking), coil again (US made Echlin failed, replaced with Bosch "Blue Coil"), generator cover (cracked from vibes), battery again (4 yrs. old and wanted more cranking power), horn and the usual maintenance/wear items (clutch cable, plugs, oil, air filter, bulbs, tires).

Guess I just got lucky! It leaks a little oil, burns a little oil and is noticably down on power so I'll probably do a little top-end freshening this winter. 33 yrs. old or not, it's been a great bike. Wish everyone could have such a positive Loop ownership experience! Cheers,

Charlie

 Zer,

Right on. Part of owning a 30 year old bike is dealing with the fact that it
is 30 years old and having fun getting to know the little idiosyncracies
that make her special. In fact....anytime you deal with machinery you are
subjecting yourself to possible failure. Nature of the beast.

One thing I can say about these birds is they run long. Of course they have
problems here and there but for the most part the will last much longer that
other bikes (read that HD's). When I see Loops with 100k miles or when I
hear stories like Charlie's ( 3000 miles on a 69 unrestored Ambo) I know
that these bikes are reliable beasts. Their beauty is a bonus :-)

Bob.....the first year you had the bike you wondered whether you had made
the right choice. Then you worked out the bikes and were happy. Everytime
the bike has a problem you will feel that way. Get use to it....part of
owning a 30 year old bike. If you don't want to tinker....get a 2001 model.

Dont sweat it Bob. It takes some time to work out al the bugs on
a 30 year
old bike that you havent owned since new. and even then things
are wearing
and have to be attended to. It's part of the fun.
