Subject: Bosch starter problem - can you all give me some tips?

I've got a problem that just started today.. that I assume is old hat
for most of you. I've got my various guzzi books.. but they don't spell
out too much. This is a Bosch starter on a '74 Eldo... to make a long
story short.. if my pinion gear (hope I've got the right terminolgy) is
hanging up such that you can hear the gear against gear racket when the
engine starts... where should I start. Does that mean the solenoid is
not doing it's job? Sorry to sound ignorant... but fact is, when it
comes to starters ,I am.. I'd love to tackle it myself rather than take
it somewher. I did remove the starter... nothing's coming apart..
everything looks solid on the surface.. but I haven't attempted any
disassembly yet ... any advice appreciated. Bill
