Hi All,
I am in the process of replacing the clutch in the '74 Eldo due to a
bad leak in the front seal of the transmission. Inspection of the splines on
input and output shafts on the transmission and both ends of the drive shaft
are in near perfect condition which is as expected due to the low mileage
(12K) on this bike. I am replacing the input shaft with a new deep spline
shaft to match the new clutch. The shaft and U-joint appear to be well lubed
with rear end grease (black 90wgt from the molly additive) and none of the
Molly has migrated to the transmission so all seem well as far as lube goes.
The U-joint seems to have no play and rotates freely in all
directions and I feel confident that it is in very good condition. My
question is now that I have it out should I disassemble it and repack the
cups with grease? If it should be repacked is this the same process as
automotive U-joints only double and much smaller? I have always used wheel
bearing grease for the automotive type. Is there a special grease for these
U-joints?
And lastly, How do I inspect the carrier bearing? I have heard that
vibration in the pegs is an indication of either a bad bearing or U-joint
and I have felt no unusual vibrations but I have factory foot boards and I
don't think they would be as sensitive.
Sorry for being a PITA, Thanks in Advance.
