I have never had a close look at the newer type Ujoint but things to
consider for retrofitting would be:

- swing arm housing size
- front and rear connections to shafts with consideration to diameter of
section that fits into carrier bearing
- where the nipple would be located for easy greasing

All this considered it seems like it would be a formidable task to retorfit
one and likely a good idea as to why people just pay the $250 for a new one.

Ian,

Good question! I would think that the swingarm may be different for the
later joint since it is larger. I think someone mentioned a difference in
the mounting flange to axle dimension for the old vs. newer rear drive
boxes. I think I will measure some of this stuff and see if there
is a good
workable combo.The bigger joint may last longer. Are the newer ones still
cheaper? Last time I got one the loop joint was way more money.
