I have a 73 eldo that had the identical problem.It produced a
ringing, knocking noise at higher rpm's and also produced a fine metal
filing deposit in the oil pan. It turned out to be my timing gears self
distructing, taking along the oil pump and rod bearings. The gears looked
fine at first glance, but where the cam lobes start to lift the
valves, the teeth on the gears were wearing badly. As for the valve
settings, pay careful attention to the procedure in the manual. It is
important to be on a compression stroke when you set the
clearance.Setting them on an exhaust stroke will give you different
clearances.I remove the spark plugs and front cover, then put my thumb
over a plug hole while turning the motor by hand to find compression.
