Lannis,
I'm sorry that the recommended cleaning didn't help; I'm
sure your frustration is mounting. Well, there has to be a reason why
it's running so poorly! One way is to determine what's wrong by finding
out what is right.

If everything checks out, then it isn't your carbs.

Joe -

Gas is fresh, tank is vented, fuel flows nicely (clear fuel lines, you
can watch it happen). Fuel runs quick through float valve with bowls
off. Plugs stay wet with gas.

The accelerator pump piston is installed with the 4 little holes "up";
blowing through it both ways showed that the check ball is working.

It's been said many times before...most carburetor problems
are in the ignition.

Compression first, spark next, gas last; it's been my mantra from years
of Britbiking, but the symptoms in this case have been so carb-like I
ignored my own experience.

Compression and electrics night tonight. I'll go work for a few hours
and then come in and whine some more .....

Well, I'm learning more about Eldorados every hour. This one certainly
seems like a well-cared-for one; everything nice and clean inside, all
the adjustments right on.

Compression first - around 140 on both sides. (I'll do a leak-down test
soon, but the bike wasn't near enough to the air-compressor for the hose
to reach.)

Valve adjustments - intake .0059 per the book, mine were both about
.0055 (more than .005, .006 feeler was tight). Exhausts were both a tad
under .010, .009 feeler was loose. So I didn't mess with them.

So the "squeeze" part of suck-squeeze-bang-blow is working. "Bang"
starts with a spark, so off with the front cover and distributor cap.
Points gap was .016, points nice and clean, new in fact, like the
condensor. No arcing at all visible at the points. Battery voltage is
12.70, battery is new, connections new, battery stays on charger when
not turning the engine, at least until the engine runs long enough for
the generator to work.

Static timing was right on the "second mark from the right" like the
book says, which is amplified by the fact that the bike lights right off
on the first turn of the engine. Distributor cap is clean as a whistle,
no carbon tracks, plug wires and caps look new. When I had good plugs
to check with, there was a nice white spark on each plug.

Resistance from points to battery negative is 0.00 on a 20K ohm scale.

I didn't get to try to start it again because all of my B6PES plugs are
now gas-fouled. Plugs are the strangest animals; they're designed to
work in a fierce environment of compression and flaming gasoline and
pressure and heat and thermal cycles - try to take one apart and you
have to use a sledgehammer and still can't do it.

But you just get one wet with gas ONE TIME and it's ruined forever. You
can clean it, sandblast it, file sharp edges on it, make it look like
new, but a lightning bolt won't make it spark again once it's
gas-fouled.

And trying to sort out a wet carburetor gas-fouls several plugs. So off
to the store tomorrow for a handful and I'll start again.

I sort of like wrenching but when it's the first week of spring and it's
70 degrees, I'd rather be riding.
