Subject: Need fork help

Looked like an iffy day for a ride here in the Pac NW, so I thought I'd work
on my forks...new seals, bearings and springs. Everything was moving right
along until reassembly. Just can't seem to get the tubes past the pinch
area in the lower triple tree. I have the plug-on-a-stick tool and I
hammered a screwdriver in the pinch area to open it a bit. Still no go. I
know I must be overlooking something simple, but for the life of me can't
see it. Where am I going wrong? I know someone out there has that magic
tip.
