One of the members from the ChiVinMoto list answered with this:
Kevin,
Your dad is correct. However, today it is an old
wives tale because they removed the naphthalene from
moth balls.
Current moth balls have p-dichlorobenzene which does
not raise the octane rating and could cause problems
with fuel injection systems.
