Tom, I don't think there are any real "must see"
places here, but there are some points of interest. If
you had lots of time to kill, I'd suggest taking a
stroll through the old Moravian part of Bethlehem, but
since that will not be your situation, I think the
most interesting point of interest would be the old
Bethlehem Steel plant. It borders the Lehigh River for
a couple of miles (literally) on the southeast side of
town. If you're taking rt. 78, I would suggest taking
the Hellertown/rt. 412 exit. Take 412 north, and
pretty soon you'll start to see the ghost of the old
plant along you right. From what I understand,
Bethlehem Steel manufactured more of our WWII navel
vessels that any other producer. They also provided
the rails for all the trains in this area, the I-beams
for many of our nations largest skyscrapers, etc.
Pretty soon the whole thing may be nothing but
memories, so if you want to see it, now's your chance.

Regarding "local cuisine," that would be Pennsylvania
Dutch cooking. In my experience, one of the most
authentic places to enjoy that is a little further
west on 78. Take the Lenhartsville exit and follow the
signs to Deutsch Eck House Restaurant. It's a great
little informal place to eat, with a PA Dutch gift
shop, too. I highly recommend it. There are many
places to eat right in Bethlehem, but Deutsch Eck is
VERY PA German, and affordable, too. I can find their
phone number for you if you want it.

If you continue west on 78 you will come to exits with
small motels. If you don't want to spend the whole day
on the superslab, old 22 is a nice road that parallels
78 from just west of Allentown for many miles.
(Deutsch Eck is at the stop sign on old 22 in
Lenhartsville.)

I'd like to ride with you, if that would be ok, but I
may end up leaving from my brother's house in the
southern part of the state. He rides an r80 - two
cylinders, overhead valves, air cooled, shaft drive -
I guess that's close enough. He's interested in coming
along. I can get off of work but for a day or two, so
I will probably ride out there Thursday and return
late Friday. I konw I'll miss most of the fun, but at
least I won't miss ALL of it (which is the likely
alternative).
