thanks.. by engine number mine should have gears then...gonna have to
have a proper look as its got a rattle which i was hoping was just a
worn timing chain!

another question - are frame and engine numbers supposed to match? mine
are nothing like each other so hopefully not! also I was looking on the
internet to see if there was info regarding estimated build dates for
engine/frame numbers.. not found it yet - anyone any clues?

But there is a way to tell if it originally came with gears or chain:
by engine number. According to the factory, starting with #58532, all
engines were fitted with chains.

That said, owners have and still do convert chain-drive engines to
gears, and vice versa, according to preference. For exampe, I had my
chain Eldo converted to gears for a while but have now switched back to
chain.

is there anyway of telling if an engine has timing gears or a chain
without pulling off the generator pulleys and front cover??
