I have two questions: 1- does anyone know of a used copy of Guzziology
that is still readable.? and 2- When I try to post a message on the
site all I get is an "error" message. It doesn't do any good to report
it because then I get an automated response that doesn't mean anything.
Any Ideas? Shiny Mike Ittner

My Ambo made strange motor noises when I first got it from John
Chicoine.

I found a nice set of ear plugs and got @ 100pair. Now its quite as a
mouse. :>)

You know, I am beginning to suspect the generator. I took off
the front last night and my belt was too loose (rubber dust all
over the place) so I removed a plate to tighten the belt a bit
thinking that would fix the problem but it didn't. It is a very
metallic sounding noise. I am assuming the generator has
bearings? If so I suspect they might be in need of repair.

One other thing I didn't mention before is the noise doesn't
start until after the bike has warmed up a bit.

Ron,
Could you please fwd. this email to the list of loop frame and Guzzi
folks. Thanks

I'm in need of a 5 speed tranny, complete, assembled and in great
running order, to help instill in me the drive impetus to finish my
Ambo restoration. I have some loop frame parts to offer for trade, as
well as a complete set of 850-T heads with rocker arms and stands.
Ambo/Eldo front fork set, spare fork springs, air boxes for carbs,
etc.

Completely disassembled, cleaned, cases painted, and all new bearings
and seals; ready for reassembly, 1970 Ambo 4 speed tranny for trade on
that 5 speed.

Thanks,
Mark

Ted:
Since the weather's been so nice here in Northeastern Ohio, I've
parked my car and have been riding the Ambo everywhere for the last 2
weeks. I've noticed what sounds like a dry bearing going south coming
from the front of the generator, kind of a squeeky squealy rolly noise,
only after the engine's warmed up, and it has concerned me also.
The generator bearings on my wife's Ambo seized up several years
ago
among much squealing and smoke. I cut what was left of the belt off and
made it home easily on the sparks made by the battery.
Now I can't remember if you can get to the front bearing to lube
it,
which would probably quiet it down. Has anyone been able to do this? As
an aside, tightening the belt too much will put an additional side load
on the gen bearing and hasten its demise.
Rick mentioned taking off the belt and see what happens, great
idea. Warm up the bike first if that's when the noise starts. Turn the
generator by hand and see what that feels/sounds like.

John,
Joe Kenny told me that he has replaced bearings in a couple of loop
generators, probably Bosch. You might try asking him.

Thanks for the ideas, guys. I'll do some rudimentary
checking next time I get a chance, but I'm leaning towards
just worn clutch plates. I've had the bike almost two
years, but this is the first season I've had it ready to
do any substantial riding so yes, the clutch has "always
been this way" - over the 1000 miles or so I've put on the
bike.

I think several have already mentioned binding on the
o-rings- a very
reasonable suggestion- but this new info makes me lean
toward thinking
that the more likely culprit is a problem with the
throwout bearing or
the pushrod or the adjuster on the lever. If you
toasted your throwout
bearing once, then when you get the machine apart, I
would clean out the
rod tunnel in case some leftover bearing parts are still
in there.
The 'pull' on my RAM is quite normal and progressive
feeling. I'm
assuming you don't do burnouts/wheelies or load your
bike with an extra
500 lbs so, with as few miles as you have on yours I am
disinclined to
think the inner body is notched already. I could be
wrong of course. I
wonder why you have such a short pull on your clutch?
Has it always
been this way?
Maybe the easiest (ha! easiest!) thing would be to pop
off the outer
body and squirt some oil into the tunnel. See if it
frees up any?

Tom Christian wrote:

Thanks.

Don't know quite what I'm going to do - perhaps nothing
at
the moment. When I fixed my tranny, I put in the
throwout
bearing incorrectly (missed a race - washer), rode it
for
about 60 miles like that until it finally gave up the
ghost.

Currently the clutch has a very short effective range of
motion i.e. the clutch disengages/engages over just a
tiny bit of motiion on the lever in the middle of its
overall throw. I'm wondering if I didn't grind off some
of the pushrod or maybe its just a well worn clutch.
I'm
going to do a complete teardown for the cosmetic upgrade
this winter, but thought I might futz with it if it
could
be done without ripping it out again (which I can now do
in my sleep).

I have the "old stuff" in there now, but I do have 3
cone
seals from MG cycle waiting on the bench, and yes, I
have
a parts book.

Greg,
When I spoke to Mike at VMD he indicated that the ClassicGuzzi site
would be back up, but he wanted to do some work to it first.

It'll fit, but the speedo drive on the T trans is located vertically
and would require a hole in the battery tray and a slight relocation
of the battery. you can switch rear covers, or have someone machine a
new hole in the correct position (about 2 o'clock if looking at from
the rear instead of 12) and plug the original hole. Otherwise, no
other issues that I can recall. My Eldo has a T trans in it, hole cut
in the battery tray.

Sure will. You can change the rear cover to one from an Eldo if you
can find
one or have the speedo boss machined and the T3 one plugged. That's
the only
difference on the outside. Inside there are a few different o-rings.

Subject: RE: Where has the looplist gone? / New members

We've added a bunch of new members lately, probably ten in the last two
months. The Loopframe_Guzzi list is now at 276 subscribers.

As is tradition here, how about our new (or even not so new) members
"stand up in front of the class" and tell us about yourself, your Loop,
what other bikes you've had in the past, etc. Always fun to hear of
others experiences.

Something like this:
Hi, I'm Charlie Mullendore from Gapland, MD and I'm an Amboholic. Have
been since '97 when I bought my '69 from a friend. It helped me through
some tough times back then (divorce and loss of employment) and fueled
my desire for more and more. Now it's gotten quite out of hand. With
two
complete riders (the mostly original '69 and "Sophia" my '72 last
winters project), three basketcases (a '70 and 2-'71s) and almost
enough
stuff to build three more, I'm in pretty deep. I've had Guzzis since
'84
(Convert, SP, LM IV, Mille GT, 850T), Morinis, Cagivas, Capriolo,
Zundapp, CZ/Jawas, and the usual Japanese stuff (mostly RD and XS
Yamahas) worked on others (BMW,DKW) and rode whatever my brother
happened to own (Ducatis and BMWs). Never found anything that fits my
personality nearly as well as a Loop. But it's not just the bike, it's
the people who own them too. Most likely wouldn't have met Dave Otis
(and became keeper of this list) or any of the other great folks on
this
list if I hadn't bought that first Ambo.
Cheers,

So that's what Ian has been up to! Was wondering where he went. Yes Ian
started the list many many many moons ago and I have kind of adopted
it and
kept it updated with those I come across on eBay and here. It keeps me
out
of trouble and I have a good excuse to watch eBay. :) Full credit for
the
list does go to Mr. Ian Adkins though.

Sure, send it my way (or Paul Linn can, too). I'll be happy to host it
until your site is up and operational...makes sense to me to maintain a
single master list on one website.

That's interesting, sort of like hunting for Easter eggs. Isn't it odd
that these companies, who are only differentiated from each other by
their customer service, would do things that frustrate their customers
so badly that they have to resort to skullduggery to try to talk to a
real person and avoid these universally stupid and useless automated
menus? These outfits must be run totally by beancounters and not be
anyone with any sense of human nature.

The worst one is the new "Verizon 411" directory-assistance service.
They used to have an operator come on line to ask what listing you
want.

Now, they have a voice recognition system that attempts to listen to
the
city and state that you speak into the phone, along with the listing,
and automatically give you the number.

See, I know how to talk to a computer. I used to work on voice
recognition and synthesizer systems. You speak slowly, in round tones,
with a clipped silence between words. But no matter HOW I speak,
whether fast or slow, with a normal accent or stilted computerese, I
have exactly a ZERO percent hit rate on the system EVER recognizing
what
I say. Every time I give the city and state I want, this
fake-concerned
recorded voice says "I - I'm sorry, I didn't understand that. What was
the city and state again?" And I have to give it again, knowing that
it
won't recognize it, so that I can eventually get to a human operator.

It's a horrible system, and I've quit using it. The management at
Verizon is probably wondering why their system usage is going down, why
their revenues and market share are falling, and I'm sure they are
blaming it on Asian competition, the falling dollar vs. the Euro, or an
economic slowdown, when actually the answer is their own pig-ignorant
incompetance and mis-understanding of their own business, and a total
disregard of the needs of their customers.

There are SO many opportunities for improvement out there. All we have
to do is look around us....
