How about a cracked generator cover housing?
Mine did that on a cross country trip and made horrible noises at specific
rpms. Harmonic mulitplication. I thought it was curtains for the motor.
Eventually I figured it out, used pliers to yank out bits of it on the
of the road and silent for the remainder of the trip.
